Field Trips

Remember field trips? The joy of chugging away from school with our sack lunches in hand? I loved field trips, especially ones that involved nature or history.
Here's my little secret. I still take field trips. Every few months I'll drop everything and spend a few hours at the art museum, or I'll walk through one of our nature preserves. I might decide to tour a small town not far away. Sometimes I even pack a sack lunch.

These trips can make me feel guilty. I could have, should have, would have written more, caught up on blogs, laundry, and such. But whenever I slip away, I come back refreshed.

Do you ever sneak off on your own field trip? Where do you go? Where would you go?

Join me on Friday to set one goal!

  1. Sometimes a field trip to the art museum. Sometimes a field trip to the electronic store to see new toys. Sometimes a trip to the bookstore. Bag lunch? Nope. Maybe a lahdidah (fancy tea or drink) from Starbuck's.

  2. Don't sneak anymore. Now that I'm sixty, the guilt has gone. I just DO!

  3. So wise, Jill.

    So wise!

I've been thinking lately I need to do more things like this. More things to crawl back into myself.

As a mom of young girls, I give, give away so much.

    This sounds wonderful.

  4. I do, there are a few surrounding towns that are beautiful to explore on long walks. The beach is a destination too, and nyc, though not often enough. What happens though is that they all turn into photo ops for the blog :)

  5. In Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, she says you must make yourself an Artist Date weekly. I was doing this and felt so energized. Exploring anything new heightens our senses, I believe. Time to get back to it! Glad you are taking time to re-energize too.

  6. I LOVE field trips. One wonderful bonus about homeschooling is we get to take lots of family field trips. Our latest was to the Field Museum in Chicago.

When I'm by myself, a field trip to Barnes and Noble just fills my heart right up. :)

  7. I'm sure God appreciates it when we just stop and admire all that He has created and given to us. Sounds like a lovely break! :O)

  12. The only field trips I've been on lately have been to the grocery store. I definitely need to take a good one. Let's see, I'll have to think about where I want to go.

  13. I do lots of little field trips on the trails around our house. Often I bring a small pad to jot down anything that comes up for my writing but that's not the focus. The focus is to just be out there.

  14. I go to the mountains--either for a hike, or to stroll around one of the small towns. It gives me great ideas for stories.

  15. Jill:
I haven't been able to do anything like that. But I will put it in my to-do list.

  16. Love these insights into your field trips. (Susan Mills, I laughed out loud! So many weeks, the grocery store is my field trip too!)

This morning, I was able to go on a field trip with my son's class to a local apple orchard. Talk about timely posts, right? And yes, we had a blast!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  17. Hi Jill -

Sometimes I'll call up Mom and say, "Wanna go out?" She's game most of the time.

We'll take off and drive to a tourist area a couple of hours away. Other times, we'll ride in the country, stopping at yard sales, interesting antique stores, or farmers' markets.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  18. I think it's a necessity to take field trips - otherwise you are just living the same ol', same ol', and as writers (and really, as human beings) we need to expand our world. I went out of town a few weeks ago to a local apple festival - loved it!

  20. Hey! Sounds like you have a great group going on right here. I am unable to put up anywhere else due to the fact my password hasn't arrived however, but I desired to introduce myself here in this.
Name is Vicente; At this time finishing up my Physics Key at OSU, and will in all probability continue to be at OSU for my graduate studies. I am a recent convert to the YEC model and I am fairly energized to find out a lot more about it -- which is why I am right here.
I almost certainly won't put up for per week or so, as I'll be spending my time reading all past messages attempting to get a sense for what has previously been discussed.
I search forward to debate and discussion.
