My Summer Reading Goals

Monday felt terribly Monday-ish, if you know what I mean. And I think you do. Chopping away at my to-do list, I was tired and cranky and just plain old weary, so I drove to the library. The New Release section had two books I wanted to read, so I grabbed both.

My steps grew peppier. Browsed the cookbook section and thumbed the new Elie Krieger. Tossed last month's InStyle magazine and Glamour magazine in my bag. Found a two-pack of Ryan Adams' cd's I'd never listened to. That's when I saw it--the table set up for the summer reading program.

Did you know some libraries offer a summer reading program for adults?

At our library, you just sign up, read a book, fill out an online entry form, and you're entered into a county-wide drawing for great gifts like an iPad mini and gift cards. Count me in!

It made me think about reading and goals. I've read twenty-nine books so far this year. I don't tally how many magazines I read because I'd have to go to some sort of magazine rehab facility, but I do track my books. Summer reading programs offer a great excuse to set reading goals, and I set mine last night.

My summer reading goals?

I'm reading whatever I want.
I'm trying new genres.
I'm NOT putting a number on that goal. If I read fifteen books, terrific! If I read one book, just as terrific.

Life gets really cut and dried sometimes. Reading is my favorite hobby, and it's a way to water my soul. I don't want to make it a chore or something to scratch off my to-do list. I want to anticipate opening a new novel. I want to get transported to another world. I want to lose myself in a story. That's my ultimate reading goal!

Do you read more books in the summer? Have you joined a summer reading program?

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I want to do more reading!!! But so far, the kids and my day job and writing book #2 in my series have kept me way busier than I hoped. I ordered a book from Amazon last week that I'm super excited about. And it's in a different genre for me. Titled Love With a Chance of Drowning. Can't wait to get some pool time with this read. :)

    1. May and June are crazy busy here too, Heather! Sooo excited for you releasing book 2 in the Mindspeak series--love the new title too!

Are you sure you want the word "drowning" in the book you're reading by the pool? Ha, ha!! :)

  2. I'll actually be reading less books this summer than I have done this winter and spring - we're moving in a little over a month, so any reading I do for a while will just be in spurts, whenever I can take a five minute break from packing (and then unpacking, after the move). For me, with two kids at home, winter is usually my best reading time anyway. Summer is always busier with activities for us, and in winter we're more apt to just snuggle in and spend a day reading.

    1. Oh, good luck with the move!! We moved last summer and remodeled the first floor of our house too. Exhausting. We laugh that we didn't have a summer last year!

      Enjoy!!

    1. I hear you! I go in spurts--sometimes I'm reading non-stop, other times I'm hooked on a show! I've heard Upstairs, Downstairs is terrific!

  4. I'm definitely spending more time this summer reading! No set limits, just whatever, whenever. I'm in a book club but not a program at our library.

Here's to a summer of good reads!

  5. My reading definitely goes up in the summer because we go to the beach so much. I always have a book or my kindle with me. It's my time to catch up on all the books I've heard so much about for so many months.

    1. Isn't the beach the best thing ever?? We'll be heading to Lake Michigan later this summer, and I plan on having a stack of books ready to go. I love hearing the waves, feeling the warm sun, and reading a book!

  6. Our library does the same thing! And I read a ton more in summer. If I pick up reading during the school year, I focus on that rather than teaching. As we homeschool, that's not a good thing:)

    1. Yeah, I get wrapped up in novels and the world disappears--that would be a problem if I homeschooled! :)

  7. I've never really done a summer reading program (except for when I was a kid), but I do read a ton...year-round. I don't think I read books more in one season or another, though, since my life at this point doesn't vary too much from season to season. It more depends on what trips and/or deadlines I have coming up. But I do always have a book going...because ahhh, I just love good books!

    1. I read all year round too, Melissa! Sometimes I read less in the summer because my kids are home, but other years I read more. Who knows why? I don't!
