One Minute Vacations: So You Want to Write a Novel

This one is for all you writers out there!

It is longer than one minute, but you don't have to watch the entire thing to get a laugh.

I've been telling people I'm a writer for years, and the responses vary. They rarely offend me, because let's face it, unless you're a writer, you really don't understand what's involved. For every person who assumes all you have to do is read a few books to qualify as a writer, there is another who encourages you on your journey.

Do you ever get discouraged by non-writers' responses when you tell them you're a writer?

Have a very happy Monday!

  2. LOL!

No, never discouraged. Amuse sometimes, but never discouraged. Outraged sometimes, but still, never discouraged :)

  3. Those videos are always funny! Sometimes I'll say I'm a 'student of writing,' and then less likely to get those frustrating responses. I know people mean well but some don't have a clue what it really takes.

  4. I just showed my hubby this video last night. He laughed too.

I only got a little insulted once when someone saw me writing at the library. When she asked me what I was doing and I told her I was working on a book, she responded with a "Oh, how cute!"
    Cute?

  8. BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! This was great!

My favorite comment came just seconds after I finished writing my 4th manuscript. I ran into the kitchen to tell my roommates and a random guest (who I didn't know). She looked at me and said, "You just finished writing a book? Do you even have a life?"

My only thought was, "who are you and why are you in my apartment?" I managed to bite my tongue, though!

    Ha!

  10. Whenever I tell somebody I write, they tell me they have a friend/girlfriend/sister who wants to be a writer, too. I say tell him/her to get a hold of me and we'll help each other out, be friends, start a crit group. Most aren't serious enough to do it, but it's worth a try anyway.

  11. What's *really* funny about that video is that there are beginning writers out there who actually think that way and non-writers who believe that's how it works.

The inevitable "What have you written that I might have read?" question makes me not tell many people that I write fiction. Most people have no concept of how long it takes to get a novel accepted and onto shelves, and trying to explain it to them sounds too much like I'm making excuses. Since I also write for magazines it's easier to wait until someone comments, "Hey, I read your article in such-and-such magazine." Then I can be the one putting them on the spot by asking, "What did you think of it?" Heh!

    Have a blessed Christmas, Jill.

  12. I love this video!

I don't get discouraged. The answer I usually hear is, "Oh, how neat." Of course, I'd love to be a fly on the wall after I walk away. Okay, maybe not a fly...eew, but invisible. :)

  13. I get "recruited" to join forces with a "friend of a friend" who writes, also! I am SO thankful for all of my writer friends who get the writing life!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  14. I don't get so much discouraged but embarrassed when they raise an eyebrow and say "oh". The word "oh" can be very ... awkward. :)

  15. Very funny video. I enjoyed the "writer's" enthusiasm, but the other character had all of the good answers.

I have little occasion to tell people I write. I just do it.

  16. Loved this, Jill! Thanks for sharing it. My husband caught the end of it and liked it too. And he's not even a writer...:)

I'm the author of the animated video, and I wanted to thank you for posting it on your blog. Sorry to have come around to you so long after you posted it, but I just came across your great site.
