My Dingbat Dog

Our mini-dachshund Sophie has been with us almost four years, and though she's calmed a big, she still regularly acts like a dingbat.

Sophie!

As I'm writing this post, she's staring at me from the floor. I bend to pick her up, but she scurries to the side. I resume typing. She "begs." I'm like, "what?" She puts her front paws on the edge of my chair. I roll my eyes and grab her, setting her on my lap.

Heaven forbid she sit anywhere without a blanket over her. No, that wouldn't do. So I have an old blanket on my chair that she can snuggle into. She'll curl up and sleep for hours...unless I print something. Then it's a bark-a-thon. The printer clearly contains evil.

Another quirk of our wiener dog? She has issues with ceiling fans. One whirl and she's jumping at it and barking because, again, the fan is a threat. Will it kill our entire family if she doesn't alert us to the madness?

Dinner time brings out an interesting habit. Sophie tippity-taps her paws over to her dish, proceeds to take one piece of kibble out, moves it three feet away, and then eats it. Why? We will probably never know.

Sophie can be a lot of fun. If my son and I play catch, Sophie joins us, and yes, she'll trot through the yard with a baseball in her mouth! She's faster than all of us, too. She likes soccer, football, and any other sport that involves running and a ball.

Our dog might be a dingbat, but I still love her!

Do you have a pet? What weird things does it do?

Have a terrific Monday!!

  1. Sounds like Sophie is a lot of fun. I had a Doxie when I was growing up. Alex kept us entertained with his quirky habits, too. I remember some fun games of chase as he and I went 'round and 'round our island kitchen.

  2. Ink will arch his back and get all Halloween bristly when Himself passes by the sunroom while mowing the lawn. Ink also did this act plus growled one time when the UPS guy made a delivery.

  3. Um, I just LOVE that you used the word "Dingbat." Twice. So I don't have a dog because I'm never home BUT my sister has a hilarious dog named Rocky. He gets so upset if things are out of place. Like, when I go to her place and he sees my red car in the driveway, he gets so disturbed solely because it's not usually there. Or if a chair is out of place on the deck, he'll bark at it. He's funny...and apparently very keen on order and organization. :)

  4. What is it with dogs moving food out their bowl, staring at it and then eating it? Do they think it's going to move? My two chihauha's paw at me from either side of the chair expecting to be put on my lap as I write. After one try, they both had pushed me out of the chair. So no more chair for them. But they decided to fight about who sits UNDER the chair so now Im the referee.

  6. Sophie the Dingbat. I like it! :)

I have a cat who rejoices in the nickname Pookie. It doesn't matter where she is in the house, if she hears me sit down in the recliner in the living room, she does an Indy 500 to get into my lap before I pick up my cross-stitch.

  7. We had a series of bad things happen when we had dogs. Hubby talks about our getting one again, but, I'm not sure about this talk.

    1. Yeah, remind him of the troubles. It's not that I don't adore Sophie, but dogs do change your life!

  8. Jill, you make me smile! I read your post to the fam over breakfast this morning. DD loves hearing about Sophie's adventures. :)

We lost our black lab several years ago and we've not had a pet since. But we are exploring cats!!! (This coming from someone who said I'd never have kitties in my house!)

I like the word "dingbat," too. Makes me think of Archie Bunker. He had a lot of good and bad qualities, but he always made me laugh. ...But I'm digressing, aren't I? :)

    1. Well, you just made my whole Monday, Cindy! Thank you! I think your family would love a cat! We always had one until my beloved Cookie-boo died a few years ago. Let me know what you decide!

  9. Oh my! My dog does the same thing when eating. One bit, three feet away then another. It drives me nuts because she carries it from the kitchen to the living room carpet. Ugh! LOL Too funny!

    1. Occasionally we leave Sophie out while running errands, and we'll find tiny nuggets of food in the couch cushions. She hides it! Bizarre!!

  10. Very cute, my daughter would love a dog, but all we have is a fish. Not too bothersome or cute either.

  11. Sophie is adorable! My bff in middle school had dachshunds. I just loved Moby and Bashful. Great dogs. We recently adopted an Australian Cattle Dog. He is so sweet.

  12. All these stories are so cute!

My Freya acts like a human and loves nothing more than being outside. One time I wouldn't let her out, and she meowed for a solid ten minutes. When that didn't work, she jumped until she opened the screen door herself. Another time, we wouldn't let her out because it was night time. After ten minutes of meowing, she came into the living room, took a deep breath, a let out a long blasting meow that sounded just like the chorus of "I will always love you". When Daddy sang along with her, she gave him a dirty look, made an indignant squeak and ran downstairs.

  13. Sophie's so CUTE!

We have several candidates, among 26 dogs, 2 cats, and a turtle. OK, the turtle may be a stretch as regards dingbat behavior.

I guess the winner is a red heeler called Spin Cycle. She can spin in circles so she's a blur, and makes other dogs dizzy, but she never seems to get vertigo.

The next candidate would be Rapunzel, a rather large Pit Bull who likes to be held under the arms and spun, or bounced on her hind legs. She giggles.

    1. Aww, Spin Cycle--too funny! I'll have to check a dog encyclopedia--I'm not sure what a red heeler looks like. We had a Brittany spaniel when I was a kid, and she was ginger and white. :)

Your Pit Bull giggles? I love it!!
