Signs I Need to Get Out More

When I'm working hard on a manuscript, I tend to spend too much time alone, wa-a-ay too much time alone. How do I know? There are signs.

1. My thoughts go in only three directions. Food, schedule, manuscript. Nothing else comes to mind. I couldn't have a conversation about something other than dinner, my kids, or writing, to save my life.

2. I spend less time on my appearance. Yeah, we all know vanity can be a bad thing, but when I'm wearing sweat pants, running a brush through my hair, and calling it good, guess what? It's not good. It's bad.

3. Driving three minutes to the grocery store seems like too much work. Seriously, when I'm not willing to make a lousy three minute drive, I know I've been cooped up too long!

4. Eavesdropping reveals I'm out of touch. When I haven't heard of the movie the ladies in front of me are discussing? Yikes.

I'm sure I could add twenty more things to this list!

How do you know you need to get out more?

Have a wonderful day!

  1. When I sit at the computer with a cup of tea to read a few blogs, Facebook, email, in the morning and next time I look at the clock, it's noon

  2. When my husband asks what I want to do tonight for date night and I'm confused because I thought it was Wednesday (not Friday). Love this post!

    1. Yes, the characters seem like real people. I've randomly cried for mine many a time!

  4. When my husband asks how I am and I say, "Frustrated, because Lenaia's at the top of a mountain and I don't know how to get her down." That's when I know I've spent too much time with fictional people. :)

  5. Rebuttals.

1 - What else matters? Once you've gotten past food, schedule, and MS, who really cares?

2 - You sound fine. My attire? Shorts, torn t-shirt, ratty boots. Grew a Wilford Brimley moustache because I'm too busy to shave, and my hair is longer than my wife's because going to the barber takes too long.

3 - A three-minute drive is too long. We really SHOULD be able to do grocery shopping online, and download the food. Where are Star Trek food replicators when we need them?

4 - Being up-to-date is overrated. I only have so much room in my head, and there isn't enough for the Modern World. Too bad for it. I'm fine.

  6. I am so there. I am motivated to finish editing this manuscript and who cares about anything else?
