5 Easy Questions with Beth K. Vogt!

Every Wednesday, I ask a writer the same five easy questions. In an effort to support and promote fellow wordsmiths, I feature authors who write a variety of genres, from sweet inspirational to mainstream thrillers. The writers themselves may be aspiring, published, or best-selling--all have made an impact on my life.

Thank you for joining me in welcoming…Beth K. Vogt!!

I found Beth through the blogs of mutual friends, and when I saw the cover of her debut novel, Wish You Were Here, I had to have her on 5 Easy Questions! Her book looks right up my alley, and I’m happy she agreed to stop by!

Let’s get to it!

1. Beverage of choice?

Coke – fully leaded and with lots of ice. I could drink that all day long, but I don’t. Second favorite beverage: SOBE Lifewater. Yum! I stock my fridge with those so that I don’t drink Coke all day long.

2. Any pets?

We are down to only one dog, my daughter’s mini-dachshund, Twister. Earlier this spring, we lost our 90 pound lab, Midas, to cancer.  But here’s the advantage of being a writer: The heroine in my second novel has a dog and I endowed him with Midas’ never-met-a-person-he-didn’t-like personality. He also flunked all attempts at obedience training, which made life frustrating… I mean, interesting.

3. Dream vacation?

Venice. Me. My husband. And a gondola.

4. What are you listening to right now?

The rare silence of a quiet house when I am the only person awake. Ve-ery nice. If I was listening to music? My “Favorites” list on my iPod, which is a compilation of oldies, country, and praise and worship.  And, yes, I’d be singing along.

5. What's for dinner?

Reservations? Take out? Or more likely something my husband cooked on the grill accompanied with a salad and baked sweet potatoes.

***

Beth, I love Coke and Sobe Lifewater. I have Strawberry Dragonfruit in my fridge as we speak! I’m sorry about poor Midas. I’m sure he was a sweetheart. Twister and my mini-dachshund, Sophie, would get along great!

Your dream vacation sounds perfect, and I am a huge fan of silence. And now that you mention a salad and sweet potato…both are making me hungry! Thanks so much for being my guest!

Wish You Were Here:

Allison Denman is supposed to get married in five days, but everything is all wrong. The huge wedding. The frothy dress. And the groom.

Still, kissing the groom’s brother in an unguarded moment is decidedly not the right thing to do. How could she have made such a mistake? It seems Allison’s life is nothing but mistakes at this point. And pulling a “Runaway Bride” complete with stealing, er, borrowing her best friend’s car doesn’t seem to solve her problems.

Can Allison find her way out of this mess? Maybe she just needs to stop orchestrating everything. Allison prefers being the one in control, and giving it up is not going to be easy. But to find her way again, she will have to believe that God has a plan for her and find the strength to let Him lead.

  1. Love Beth! Such a sweet soul. And I love that you're a Coke lover, Beth, but country? Never would have guessed it.

    And the gondola--excellent!
Venice is high on my DH's list.

    2. Country is a rather recent love of mine, Wendy. I got hooked on Lady Antebellum and Sugarland and it just went from there ...

    3. I like Sugarland too, Beth! I'm a fan of most mainstream country, though. :)

  2. Fun post! If you haven't read Wish You Were Here, I HIGHLY recommend it. Can't get over how the characters stay with you, week after week after week of reading the book! And Beth is such a delight! Ah... Venice. Fascinating city. :-)

    1. Wow, what a fantastic recommendation! I've heard plenty of great things about Beth's book and can't wait to read it! Thanks, Paula!

    2. Paula,
Venice captured my imagination -- and my son, who was seven at the time, wanted to live there! I also would love to visit the surrounding islands, which have their own cultural personalities, I'm told.

  3. Yay, Beth! You should definitely read her book, Jill. It's ah-mazing! And I agree that the cover is beautiful.

We want to hit Venice someday as well! Something about water makes me giddy.

    2. Coke, with light ice for me, yum! I'm sorry to hear about your lab. They're such great pets, but I do hear they have trouble curbing their enthusiasms. LOL Looking forward to reading your book, Beth!

    3. Lindsay,
I feel especially close to God when I am near water -- the ocean, especially.
And Jessica, the dog trainer told us he had never met a Lab more stubborn than our Midas.
      :O)
Well, at least we knew what we were dealing with. And he was lovable, that was for sure.

  5. Beth!! How fun to see you here!!

I'm with you on the Coke...well, except you know me...Diet Coke with Lime. I'm quite picky when it comes to my pop (or soda as the rest of the country would say).

  6. Just got an email from amazon telling me my copy has finally been shipped! Yay! Jill could not have hosted a sweeter person on her blog. I first met Beth at the Acfw conference and within 3 minutes she was hugging on me and praying for me. :) she's really remarkable!

Love this fun peek into her head! I'm a big fan of yumberry pomegranate and acai fruit punch! I'm a little jealous of her moment of silends. Babies are so noisy!

    Congrats, Beth!

    1. Amy,
You are a delight and meeting you was a God-moment at ACFW.
And yes, silence is rare during the baby years -- and all the more precious.

    2. I hope to meet you both at ACFW this fall! I'll finally be able to attend! And congrats on the baby--they ARE noisy, but they're sooooo lovable and cute!

  7. Love your novel, Beth! There is one part at the end that I am still smiling about, but alas I cannot ruin it for other readers...So everyone...get thee down to the bookstore or amazon.com.

At this time of year I look forward to the end of the school year when everything becomes so much simpler for a few months. That and watching my oldest son pitch in little league.

  8. Beth, I'm totally with you on the Sobe Lifewater. It's the only thing that helps me limit my soda intake! I know I've said this before, but I love your novel It's got everything, characters I can relate to, twists I don't expect, humor and a happy ending.
I'm also glad to connect with Jill. This is a great blog, I just signed up for email updates and followed her on Twitter.

  9. Ooh! Beth is Jill's guest. Two of my favorite people in one place. =)

Venice would make for a very romantic vacation. I hope you and your sweetie are able to go there one day, Beth--and get a postcard or two. =)

Loved your book, Beth. Finished it yesterday. I read 95 pages while on my walk. Yes, I really can walk and read like Katie Ganshert does, and I'm delighted to make that discovery because that means I just added four hours of reading time to my week. Color me happy!

  10. No Coke for me; instead, Starbucks dark roast w/ 1 splenda, light cream. Years ago I had to choose between Venice & Salzburg--went w/Salzburg & enjoyed. Still . . .
WYWH is a wonderful book, lots to think about & learn from after you close the cover the first time. I'm pleased to HIGHLY recommend also. Well-done, Beth!

  11. Good morning, everyone! What a fun way to start the day, seeing everyone here at Jill's blog!
Y'all are such an encouraging bunch of friends and I'm smiling from ear-to-ear. (Insert photo of me smiling.)
    :O)
Right now I'm trying to choose between Strawberry Dragonfruit, Black and Blue Berry or Yumberry Pomegranate Sobe Lifewaters.
And FYI: I Have been to Venice once, when my first 3 kiddos were preschoolers. We road the water taxi and skipped the gondola.
I'm still debating the walking and reading thing -- although I did that a lot when I was a kid. Used to frustrated my mom to no end!

    1. Last year, I took our little Sophie wiener dog for a walk while reading a Jenny B. Jones book. I lost track of time and realized we'd been standing in one spot for a while. Then I knew why--Sophie had found a Kildeer nest and was eating a baby. So gross! I felt terrible!!

  12. Sobe Lifewaters. Haven't tried it. Must! I would love to go to Venice...or Scotland or Ireland or Hawaii...One day. Wish You Were Here is one of my all-time favorite books! And I'm smiling with Michelle...Can't wait for the next one to come out.

  16. I was glad to hear Amy got a message from Amazon. I've been waiting for my copy to show up in the mail. It's fun to learn more about Beth, one super cool lady!!

It was eye-opening to learn of all the "Nevers!" that took a turn. God is definitely a God of surprises!!

Beth, my dog Marly, probably also taken by cancer, with a bit of Lab in her, would have been stiff competition for your Midas. The trainer we went to said the same thing about her, and I could tell you some stories of how we finally learned that Mama was the top dog. LOL

Thanks for sharing Beth with us today, Jill. I hope you both make it to Venice, and love imagining you there!!

  18. Oh, I love Never Stories! I said I'd never marry a preacher, and here I am, a PW for 37 years. I was five when I walked the aisle. I've also said I'd never write fiction, but if I can come up with a clever story like Beth's, I may have to try!

Love this interview--will look for your book this Saturday, Beth, when I'm at the bible store for a book signing of my own!

    Many blessings,
    Jen
