Why I Love to Read

Christmas is less than a week away, so what did I do last Thursday? I picked up the the thickest novel I own and started reading all 1100 pages of it. Not a very smart move, considering I have a house to clean, presents to wrap, cookies to bake, and some last-minute shopping to get done. But if you love to read, you probably understand this.

Santa Sophie--she's fun to dress up during the holidays!

Why I love to read:

- Nothing else matters when I'm reading a good book.

- I think about things I wouldn't normally think about, like giant steam engines, evil dictators, an impossible romance, a group of morally corrupt people, exotic locations, or anything else some fantastic writer imagined.

- Reading a book takes longer than watching a movie, and my brain has to fill in the images. It's more of a mental workout. I always hate to finish a great book, yet I race to keep reading it.

- I often get interested in new subjects after I read a good book. I study different countries, time periods, philosophies, even different fashion styles.

- Friends who are also readers share great books with me and they listen to me rave about my favorite authors. We get it. :)

- I always feel a rush of excitement when I open a new book, like I might find something I've never thought of before, and often that's exactly what happens.

Last week I received an e-mail from a teacher in Northern California, and it made me appreciate all of the wonderful people who not only love to read but who are sharing it with others. So I'd like to give a huge shout-out to Ms. Arianna Hernandez's English class. She told me how proud she is of her students' recent projects, and I'm proud of them too. Here's to you--fellow readers!

Why do you love to read?
Have a fabulous Monday!!

  1. Because I love being swept up into a different world and falling in love with people who aren't real. :)

  2. I started reading Lark Rise last week - I hoped it would be a delightful story along the lines of Gaskell or Austen, but so far there's a decided lack of plot and/or character development, just lots and lots of blank description of life in the hamlet, and I'm halfway through and wondering when the story is going to start!

Which means I'm contemplating finishing it as quickly as I can and diving into an old favorite - Wives & Daughters or North & South, where I really can lose myself in the story and stretch my brain thinking about all the complex issues.

What was the book you read? I'm devoured with curiosity now!

  3. It's a way to travel and learn about other places I may never see otherwise, all while reading a good story.

  6. Sophie is too cute. Does she love getting dressed up?
I love to read for many of the reasons you mentioned. I've been told I have a 'studious' personality, so tend to read to learn too. Often I'll be doing a google search on a subjects or events mentioned in books I'm reading.

  7. What you said - I love to get swept away from my (sometimes) mundane routine and into high adventure.

  8. It's nice to be able to be transported to a different place or time to forget problems or stress at least for a little while. It's also a great way to procrastinate!

  9. Ok, Jill, my mind's ears perked up when you mentioned giant steam engines. You didn't happen to be reading a steampunk novel, did you, lol? ;-)

The cozy warmth of the Christmastime makes me want to lounge around and read more. Right now I have stacks of new books and ones on loan from the library waiting to be read.

  10. Sooo nice to hear from you all! I was on the couch for the past three days, so I'll keep this brief.

E Louise--Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. While I don't agree with her personal philosophy of life, the woman could write some awesome fiction!
Lynn--Sophie does not enjoy it as much as the kids and I do!

Wishing you all a wonderful reading holiday soon!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  11. Sophie is uber cute! What a darling little pup.

I love to read for so many reasons. Like many here, I want to be swept away to another world. When a book grabs me, I'm gone. No housework, cooking, laundry, writing, nothing gets done until I finish the book and even then the story stays with me.

I just bought three books that aren't in my usual genre and I'm looking forward to stretching my reading arc a bit. I get to stuck in one genre and I need to branch out!

  12. Oh - I love this post. :)

    I love to read, because:

    It's fun. :)

It gives me the opportunity of being a voyeur without the risk of getting caught. lol

It allows me to peek into lives, time periods, love triangles, broken hearts, devious minds, etc...

Reading is entertaining, instructional, educational, and life-changing.

Did I say I love this post? I love this post!
