My Reactions to This Week's Headlines

I've brushed off several intriguing headlines from my online homepage this week, but on a whim, I read some of the stories. Today, I'm going to share with you my reactions to two gems.

First headline...

"Fan explains why he threw a hot dog at Tiger Woods"
(Story via The Associated Press. Article is linked.)

My reaction:

1. Love the headline! Hot dogs? Tiger Woods? I'm immediately wondering why anyone would throw a hot dog at a golfer. Surely not to injure him? Not a great weapon. I click on the story.

2. Opening paragraph: "A California man arrested for throwing a hot dog at Tiger Woods during a tournament said he wanted to do something 'courageous and epic.'"

Oo-ka-a-ay. I'm not sure anything involving a hot dog would be described as courageous and epic, unless it involved feeding someone trapped in a cave for twenty-three days. I mean, really, how is throwing a hot dog at a champion golfer courageous or epic? I'm actually taking a few moments right now to ponder this.

Nope. Got nothing.

But I did laugh throughout the article, so maybe the hot dog thrower did do something epic? It's not easy to make people laugh.

Second headline...

"Family lost in Mass. corn maze calls 911 for help"
(Story via The Associated Press. Article is linked.)

My reaction:

1. Again, classic headline. Those corn mazes freak me out. I could easily see myself getting lost in one for days--except I have a good sense of direction, and I would probably walk through the corn until I found civilization. Hmm...

2. Oh boy, I've got two goodies here for you.

     a. 911 call: "'Hi I just called, I'm still stuck at Connor's Farms, I don't see anybody I'm really scared, it's really dark and we've got a three-week-old baby with us,' the woman is heard on police tapes telling the dispatcher."
     b. Info about maze: "The maze has several guide posts with clues and posters instructing visitors to send text messages to receive additional guidance to help them make their way out."

After reading the entire article--it seems there were street lights, the sounds of cars nearby, and the above-mentioned guide posts and posters with text messaging instructions--I can only assume the family panicked. Maybe we get so set on following the rules (in their case staying on the actual maze path) we sometimes forget to use common sense. If street lights and the sounds of cars were nearby, maybe the first option would be to walk toward the lights even if it meant weaving through corn stalks. I can't judge. Just a suggestion.

What headlines grabbed your attention this week? Are you giggling at the "courageous and epic" hot dog throw too?

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. I'm wondering what happened to the hot dog bun? Did it eject from the hot dog like the third stage of the ol' Mercury rockets? And how far was the hot dog thrown? The distance could be epic!

  2. I'd probably freak out in a corn maze too! Esp. with a 3 week old baby. Except, I probably wouldn't go into a corn maze with a 3 week old baby that late in the day. :)

  3. I think I'm going to have to get a new online homepage. Mine's not even remotely as entertaining as yours.

  4. LOL! I read both those story and a similar reaction. You just put it into words all the better!

  5. Good morning!

CJ: Well, apparently Tiger described the bun as "disintegrating" as it flew, which I find even more fun! Epic!

Laura: I'm with you. The first six weeks of both of my kids' lives involved me shuffling like a zombie, still wearing maternity clothes, and feeling triumphant if I could make it through 30 minutes of grocery shopping! Kudos to this woman for having a life with a newborn!

Ayda: I know. I am blessed. Charter hooks me up with the good stuff every morning!

J.A.: Aren't they great? I wanted to post about one other headline--Demi Moore's daughters begging Bruce Willis to stage an intervention (why would an ex be the one to stage an intervention? The girls are mostly grown. Why don't they just do it? Or her husband? Or her family? Or...See how my judgmental side comes out. Not pretty.)--but it was a video w/ads in the beginning. Not nearly as fun. :(

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  6. These are awesome, Jill! Too funny!

We had an Amber alert blasted on our TV and a VM about it. It freaked my kids out (wait until they're old enough to read PS). We prayed and worried, until the news ended well. The boy had fallen asleep in a car near the property.

  7. A hot dog at Tiger Woods-- I never thought I would see the day:)

Funny post Jill, and I love your new blog design!

  8. Love this post, Jill! I've been thinking about posting about current headlines, too, and to me, both of these stories fall under "stupid." :) Especially the 911 callers in the corn maze. My family did a huge corn maze last weekend. We made it out alive. Without having to notify authorities.

  9. Hilarious! My luck, I'd have no signal in the maze! That was priceless! Thanks for the giggles this morning!

  10. My friends and I pondered what would happen if we got lost as we navigated through a corn maze last weekend, at night. I said the corn maze owners have a spotlight they shine in the sky with the lettering 'follow the light.' My friends set their flashlghts on me and rolled their eyes. :) I think it would be a good idea though!

  11. My family and I were just talking about the cornmaze one the othe day. So funny! That's totally something I would do....

getting lost in a cornmaze, not calling 911.

  12. Jill: The news media must have had two slow news days. I can see the family being lost in a corn maze being a human interest story, maybe. I'm not into golf. I wonder if Tiger Woods might have paid the man to do something 'off the wall' in order to get publicity.

  13. Thanks for the chuckle this morning, Jill. I like to think that if I wanted to do something "courageous and epic" I'd come up with something more creative than tossing a tube steak at Tiger Woods. =)

  14. Wendy: Thank goodness the boy was fine! Amber Alerts terrify me, but I'm so glad we have them. I know they do a lot of good.

Tamika: Thank you! And I know--people flinging meat at Tiger? Weird!

Jennifer: What?? You didn't have to call 911 to make it out of the corn maze? You should get a T-shirt or something, right? :)

Jessica P: Yeah, my phone dies a lot. It's probably the last thing I'd rely on!

Lynn: I like the way you think!

Katie: I hear you! It's easy to get turned around in those things!

Quietspirit: The news must have been slow! And we'll never know exactly what caused the hot-dog guy to start tossing!

Keli: I would come up with something more courageous and epic too. Love your description of a hot dog--ha!!

  15. I once got lost in a large corn field...acres and acres of it, yes, sad but true. I eventually found my way out, but I understand the creepiness that takes over after wandering through tall, brown dried corn after awhile...unable to see over it in any direction and jumping at the slightest noise three rows away from you. It's creepy.

I always think of the movie, Signs or Field of Dreams...waiting for an alien or a baseball team to pop out of the corn.

  16. Didn't hear about the hot dog thing, but I did hear the corn maze story. My gracious...it's odd to me what makes headlines these days.

I also saw a diddy on my yahoo news this morning with this gal sitting covered in sticky notes...I wondered how someone snapped my pic without me knowing!

  17. The FDA is now requiring signed disclosures for each person and pet entering any corn maze in the US. The warning label is 827 pages long. They are hoping that anyone considering a reckless adventure in a dangerous corn maze will return home safely any time prior to page 800 of the warning.

  18. Aw, man. I'm hungry but without kids so didn't plan on cooking...until I hop by to comment and see a big ol'hotdog staring at me. Thanks. ;) Yep. My little man found the way through our local maze for my husband and I. *sigh* I heard blonde jokes for a week. Little man went with the nephews and my mom this year. Ha.

  19. Loree: I grew up with corn fields all around, and they are intimidating. Especially when our overactive imaginations start hearing the creepy clucking noises from Signs!!

Ralene: Makes you want to write articles, now, doesn't it? :)

Cynthia: Guilty! I knew you'd be covered in 'em... :)

J Holmes: Oh wow, that's hilarious! I'd fall asleep in the middle of the maze way before page 800...
Chelle: I know. It looks delicious. My fault. Maybe a little McD's is in order? And children are annoyingly adept at weaving through those things at the speed of light!

  20. Oh, man, I read both of these stories too. Epic and Courageous?

    I don't think so! LOL

  21. Somehow I missed the Tiger Woods story. LOL, what's wrong with people?

And the family in the maze - how embarrassing. I have to wonder how all of them lost their senses.

  22. I missed the Tiger Woods story, but I caught the corn maze one. Weren't they really close to the end?

  23. Erica: I know!!

Stacy: Yeah, I'm sure it must have been pretty embarrassing.

Patti: They were 25 feet from the end. :)

  24. I heard the corn maze story. Since I don't text, I'd probably resort to 9-1-1. LOL! How embarrassing!
