Summer Trips

We recently returned from a long weekend up north, between the upper and lower peninsula in Michigan to be exact. Mackinac Island has been a resort destination for over a century, and it maintains its old-fashioned aura. No automobiles are allowed. The only ways to get around are by foot, bicycle, or horse.

Although a drizzly day, we pushed our bikes up the island to get this gorgeous view.

Below is the famed Grand Hotel. Perched high up on a bluff, it overlooks the Mackinaw straits and boasts a magnificent view of the Mackinaw Bridge. (Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City are spelled differently, for reasons still unclear to me!)

Here's a snapshot of the adorable shopping district. Think fudge, t-shirts, and more fudge. Yum!

Fort Mackinac brims with interpreters in period costumes. We enjoyed watching someone get court-marshalled, and my niece and brother-in-law even learned how to properly march in formation.

A highlight of our trip was a stop at Hartwick Pines. The park is a preserve for the tall growth forests that used to cover northern Michigan. Nature takes over in Hartwick Pines--the trees are protected from being cut. Beautiful trails lead to a restored logging camp and a hands-on visitors center, but the highlight for me was this incredible wooden church nestled in the middle of towering trees.

Do you take long weekend trips? Where will this summer lead you?

  1. Mackinac Island is a place my husband and I have always wanted to visit. Did you take your kids with you?

We'll have to keep this in mind when we plan our next vacation.

  2. We hope to head up to Maine over one long weekend. Still have a week at Ohio and NC coming up.

    Busy summer.

    Love the pics.

  3. Good Morning!

Heather: I'd say it depends on the ages of the kids. You'll have more fun if you bring your bikes (or rent them) and no one is on training wheels. While there's plenty to see without bikes, I recommend wheeling around the entire island--about 8 miles--for a gorgeous ride. Also, we stayed in Mackinaw City and ferried over for the day. It helps keep down costs. We also found an Internet coupon special to save on the steep price of the ferry. Sault St. Marie is only a 45 minute drive north and it's the tippy-top of the UP.

Wendy: Maine...I've always wanted to go. Eat a lobster for me, okay? And have a great time in OH and NC too!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  6. Sounds like fun. The only place I will be headed is to Disney for the RWA National Convention. I am really looking forward to it and hooking up in person with my critique partners.

  10. Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing.
Alas, we almost never travel, but that's okay. There always seems to be something to do here. ;)

  11. Beautiful pictures! Thanks for sharing. :o) Someday I'll get up that way...

The week of the 4th we're headed to Silverton, CO. There's something about that high country I just can't help but love. And fireworks are amazing in deep, rock canyons like Silverton.

    Have a great day! :o)

  12. Hi Jill -

I'd love to visit Mackinaw and Mackinac someday. Yum, it that fudge I smell?

Mom and I will do a day trip to the Lancaster area. It's close, and we're sightseeing buffs. I also enjoy Sight and Sound Theater. They do awesome Biblical productions.

Most of our other car trips involve family visits.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  15. The pictures of your trip looked great!

We do a bunch of trips in the summer... while in BC we do long weekends to Campbell River and Kamloops, then around here we do lots of weekend camping trips. I LOVE summer for the trips. :)

  16. Oh wow!! Looks like you guys had a very full weekend! :-) Your pictures make me want to jump into the car and head out to visit those places! It's been a few years since we've been to Mackinaw Island. We went in the fall last time and it was gorgeous.

We're not doing any weekend trips this summer because we're hoping to head out East later in August and that's such a big trip! But I really love that Michigan has so many beautiful spots to visit!

Susan JR: Road trip with Mom? I would love that. How fun! And Lancaster sounds gorgeous.

Icy Roses: How cool! Aren't the views amazing?? Have fun wherever this summer takes you!

Karen L: Nice! You have a lucky sister. I'm sure the three-year-old will love having Aunt Karen to play with!

Kelly: I would love to visit BC. I've heard so many good things, and I'm a sucker for being outside. Have a great time!

Jody: I could go to Mackinaw every year, but with our track record, we're lucky to make it every decade! :) A trip out East sounds awesome! And August is a nice time to go. Have fun!
