One Goal Friday: May 28, 2010

Memorial Weekend has arrived! It's the unofficial kick-off of summer. Watermelon, corn-on-the-cob, barbecues, graduations--summer, yes, summer! No more packing school lunches, and the Mom-Shuttle will be closed until fall.

It's Friday, time to set one goal for the upcoming week. It can be related to work, school, home, family, or just something fun, but it should enhance your life.

Last week, my goal was to finish reading The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maass. I did not meet that goal, but I'm about two-thirds through the book. I don't feel bad taking my time on this excellent guide.

Here are your goals from last week:

Wendy: Get to 75K on WIP
Terri: Rework chapters to send to crit. partners and critique a few chapters
Georgiana: Prepare for graduation party (Congratulations!!)
CJ: Make graduation party invitations (Congratulations!!)
Keli: Another 5K words
Sharon: Write two chapters, write one nf article, and research educational market
Cindy: 6-10K on new WIP
Elana: Write every day
Beth: 2K words
Kelly: Stick with one-ingredient diet and then create healthy eating plan
Erica: Press on and finish edits
Susan JR: Clean and organize desk
Karen: Spend time in the Word
Jen: Lose one pound, decide on poem, and create index for book
T Anne: Get through edits
Diane: Get back on treadmill 4x's
Lynn: Courage!
Hannah: Try hardest at tennis match (I saw you won! Congrats!)
Jessica: No raw brownie mix! (I had raw cookie dough this week. Bad me.)
CMOM: Finish cleaning before company arrives and write one day this week

How did you do?

My new goal is to be content right where I'm at. Every day, I want to be grateful for what I have--at least for one week!

What about you? What one goal will make your life better this week?

Please leave your goal in the comments section. If you're new to my blog, I'd love to hear your goal too, but if you aren't comfortable, that's okay!
Join me next week for June's topic: The Bliss of Summer.

Have a terrific weekend!

  1. Okay, it's get-serious time for me! Last day of school and I have high hopes for this summer. My ambitious goal for this week....finish my outlining (at least to the point where I can start writing) and by next Friday, I'd like to be writing the rough draft.

    Yikes! and Eeek!

  2. Back on the treadmill again. Did not meet my goal last week. :O(

  3. Oh crapola, I got to 74K. The end is going slower than I'd expected. Guess I'm trying to nail it.

Also from last week, I biffed my author shots. Need to do a retake b/c I was so nervous in them. Let's just say modeling could never be in the cards for me. ;)

  4. Yum, cookie dough! I almost made some last night but didn't have enough butter because I used it for banana bread. But...I stayed away from the brownie mix!
I hope you make your goals this week!
My goal is to go running twice and to figure out how to lengthen a category into a single title.

  5. Good morning!
Katie: With school out, you'll have a little room to breath. I know your outline will go fine. (We have one week left of school--I'm soooo ready for it to be done!)

Diane: That's okay--you'll hop on this week!

Wendy: Only 1K away from goal. I'd say that's great! And you don't fool me; you're beautiful. I can't imagine you taking a bad picture!

Jessica: Category to single title--awesome! Can you think of a subplot? Or a few minor characters to spice things up? I'm sure once you hit on how to do it, it will fly!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  6. Have the front of the invite lettered, now just have to settle on a date and take care of the inside. And you're goal for this week is one we should all take on.

  7. Last week's goal went well. This week my goal is to write a detailed outline for the new writing project that's been rattling around in my head the last little while.

  9. Hi Jill,

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Weekend! My goal for next week is to finish reading through Book #2 and make the substantive edits. Then I'm going to have my freelance editor help me with the line edits and will take the following month to work on those before handing in my MS to my in-house editor! So lots of work still ahead! :-)

  10. CJ: Alright! You're moving right along. By the way, I saw the scholarship announcement on twitter--congratulations!!

Kelly: I have one of those rattling around my head too. Good luck! And thanks, I can't wait for the weekend!

Jody: I'm sooo proud of you!! You finished the book early. That must feel really good. Now, on to edits--have fun!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  11. I like your goal Jill-contentment and gratitude. I have the Donald Maass book on my to buy list. But don't think I'll make it a goal this week since I have begun Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. It is my second time through and my goal is to complete Chapter One and write about my adventure.
To all you Americans, have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

  12. This week I really need to finish a website I'm working on and finish a small writing project that is due. I'm so glad that we have a long weekend. I want to both relax AND be productive.

    Have a great weekend all!

  13. Jill, I hope you have a great summer. This is my teacher hubby's last day too. Ten weeks of his company. Love it!

I just missed my 5K goal, coming in at 4,800 words. It rounds up to 5,000, so I'll take it. :)

Goal for upcoming week: another 5K.

  14. Well, I JUST reached my goal I had this week, so now I feel like a monkey is off my back and I can relax...until after this long weekend. :)
My goal for next week is to do research and even write a little speech for a church talk I was asked to give.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Jill, I love your goal for next week!

I reached my goal, ending up at 7,200 words even with the craziness of last week.

My goal for this weekend is to enjoy myself. Two parties to go to (one I'm not supposed to know about :D), so I'm trying to get over the rest of this cold so I can feel excellent for the weekend. As far as writing, I'm going to aim for 16,000 words. It's probably higher than I should go for, but I'm going to try to make it anyway :) Have a SUPER weekend!

  16. My goal is 3 hours of editing.

  17. Lynn: Take your time with the book. Craft books need time to simmer. Good luck!

Regina: I'm sure you won't have any trouble meeting your goals. You have a fab weekend too!

Keli: I'm all about rounding up! Congrats! And enjoy your hubby!

Jennifer: Woo-hoo! Isn't research fun? I could get lost for days... That's great you're giving a speech for church. Good luck!

Cindy: Wow! Way to attack that WIP! Oh, and happy birthday a little early! Have fun at the not-quite-a-surprise party!

Julie: You want to come and do 3 hours of my editing too? :) Have fun!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  18. My goal is the same as last week, spend more time in the Word. Didn't achieve it like I wanted to, so will be aiming for that one again.
    Have a great weekend:)

  19. Yay! Yep, I won on Friday (senior day) and lost on Tuesday (last match of the season *tear*). Oh well!

This week, I want to get my graduation announcements mailed out, since we STILL haven't done that! Ahhhhh! Crazy time, wish it was behind me....kind of, but not at the same time *wink*

  20. Still slogging away at the edits, but the end is finally near!

Goal for this week: Enjoy my family and the company that is coming to visit!

  21. I'm STILL not through edits!!!! But I will be by next week, I can feel it in my creaky bones. So new goal; complete edits and move on in life! lol! Have a great long weekend!!!

  22. You are so good to keep up with us. I love you for that, Jill.

Hey, can you teach me how to make that watermelon basket? Looks yummy!

I did not lose a pound, but I stayed the same--at least I didn't gain.

I decided not to enter the contest, but I keep thinking I should. The deadline is the 1st, and it's a $10 late entry fee, so I don't want to waste one hour's worth of my paycheck.

I started on the index to my book. It's going to take about a million hours, I think.

This week my goal is to lose a pound for sure, make progress on the index, and dig into Kathi Macias' new book, No Greater Love.

Have a lovely weekend! God bless our soldiers who keep us free,
    Jen

  24. Hi Cindy -

Yay! My desk is totally cleaned off. The challenge now is to keep it that way.

Next week's goal, study deep POV, motivation, and setting before making changes in my manuscript. :)

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

    Blessings,
    Susan

  25. Karen: We all could do better!

Hannah: Congrats on the win, and my sympathies on the loss. Have fun getting those invites out!

Erica: Ah, love it when the end is in sight. Enjoy the fam!

T.Anne: I know. Just when I think I'm almost done, I get some feedback that makes me dig in again. Good luck!

Jen: Oh, that I knew how to make that watermelon basket! Good job on maintaining your weight. Maybe a different contest will be a better fit? Have a blessed week!

Covnitkpr1: Welcome, I'm glad you stopped by and look forward to reading your blog.

Susan JR: Woo-hoo! Organized desk! Deep POV, motivation and setting? Whew! Have you been to Camy Tang's Story Sensei blog? She has terrific articles on these topics. Try it!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  29. Oops - haven't kept up with one goal Fridays, but I'm getting back into it.
I didn't make my 5,000 word goal for my fiction WIP last week or the week before that - got 5,000 total for both weeks though.

My new goal: Start and Continue a 365 Days of Blessing project at my blog, keeping an attitude of gratitude in the forefront of my life for the next 365 days. Feel free to stop by and list out some of your blessings there.

  30. Jill,
I linked to your blog on my post about goals today...I got close to reaching my goals last week. I'm sure I got close because I posted. I'm going to post my goals on my sidebar on Mondays and mark down when I've completed each goal. :)

I hope you had a nice Memorial Day...
