Open Your Eyes

Every time I opened my eyes last Thursday afternoon, I saw something strange. I kept getting this feeling I was going to see something amazing. In fact, a little voice inside kept prodding, open your eyes. You're going to see something amazing. Keep them open. You don't want to miss this. You'll know it when you see it.

I walked around a local park for an hour, keeping my eyes open. A male cardinal perched on a log only twenty feet from me. Two butterflies (in March? In Michigan??) hovered over my head. Later that afternoon, a chubby woodchuck raced before me.

Amazing? Not really. Cute, though.

Later that afternoon, at a park near a river, I happened to glance up. A patch of rainbow misted through the clouds. It hadn't rained, and indeed, no rain had been forecasted. Instead of returning my attention to the rushing water, the park, or the seagulls squawking about, I searched the rest of the sky.

Two rainbow rings converged and circled the sun. I've never seen anything like it. They were bright, intense, unusual. I couldn't glance away.

Amazing.

I knew it as soon as I saw it.

The next day, a mallard duck stood on the roof of my two-story house. I wish it would have stayed long enough for me to take a picture!

Have you ever had a sensation that something different would happen that day? Did you listen? Did you scoff? Did something out of the ordinary happen?

Join me on Wednesday when we'll talk about vision boards!

  1. I love this post! I get those feelings sometimes. I need to get better at slowing down, quieting my mind, and listening to God's voice. sometimes I think we have a hard time doing that here in America, with our self-sufficiency, with our gadgets and gizmos and fast-paced life.

You know...a rainbow is a symbol of God's promise. I wonder what he was promising you, Jill.

  3. The rainbow must have been amazing. Just think you would have missed it if you hadn't looked up.

  4. Jill, what a wonderful reminder to actually sniff the roses. Look all around. See what our creator hath made. It is all so wondrous.

Even the woodchuck. That tongue twister just came into my mind. It will be there all day. I will think of you. *grin*

In this age of technology it is very easy to FORGET to look around us. To actually smell a flower. To observe all of creation. Thanks girl.

I am unplugging for a little while. I have to make sure everything is ready to query. I'll check in though. Especially Wednesday. Sounds verrrry interesting. (^_^)

  6. Intuition is so important to pay attention to. You felt you'd see something, and paid attention to that feeling. Look at the beautiful results!

  7. Good Morning!

Katie: I'm always rushing to do one more thing! But it's easy to miss the moment. Hope your first day back is a good one.

Terri: I agree, you do need one of those days soon! You're always in my prayers.

CJ: I would have missed it. In fact, I wasn't even planning on "wasting" time at the park, but that voice kept prodding.

Robyn: Woodchucks are soooo cute! Have a great unplugged week. And good luck getting that query out!

Em-Musing: I'm sorry my FB message wouldn't go through. Not sure why that is, although sometimes FB and Twitter are just cranky!

Joanne: I have an intuition I can't ignore. It's too loud!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  8. Sounds lovely! It's good that you were able to slow down enough to really listen. A good lesson for us all.

  11. Hi Jill -

Being outdoors in the spring has that effect on me. I saw the first crocus blooms in my favorite color - purple.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  12. Yes, I've had that feeling before. It makes me uneasy until the something shows up, and then I am in awe.

  13. Oh how cool, Jill! You saw some absolutely beautiful things! But I think the key is slowing down to notice and listening to the inner voice that tells us to slow down!

  14. Beautiful! My current 2 week blog break is actually partly because of this type of feeling. Listening to that voice that says..."slow down, take this time... something good is going to happen."

  15. Georgiana: And a lesson I need to learn all too often!

    Kristen T: Me too!

    Angie M: When I listen, I'm usually rewarded. When I don't, well...

Susan JR: Gorgeous! I can't wait until the tulips pop up!

Susan M: Oh yes, I understand. And before you see it, you're scared of being disappointed, right?

Jody: If only I would slow down every day... :)

CMOM: Good for you! It's vital to listen to our inner voice.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  16. Jill, you are an AMAZING writer! WOW!

Yes, I have had that feeling...like two weeks ago, when I was wrestling with the editor's mandate to write a new ending. Had cried, then prayed. Though I still was clueless, a wonderful peace came...and the next morning, when I rose to write, an OWL was hooting good morning! Yep, we don't have 'em that often, and usually they come around midnight or right after sunset. Soooo cool I knew it was a gift from the Lord. As was an ending idea.

Whew. Bet your eyes'll be tired. now.

  17. The rainbow rings circling the sun sound amazingly beautiful! I remember driving my daughter to school one morning with the sun coming up on one side of the road and dark clouds with a bright rainbow on the other side! Something I haven't seen before or since! What an amazing artist our God is!! Have a fantastic week, Jill!

  18. I've had that feeling all day and you know what? I found my sons long lost wallet. It had his state ID in it and I thought it might cost me a trip to the DMV. I'm happy to report I'm DMV free for the near future.

  19. Patti: An owl! What a sign for your ending! I'm glad it brought you peace.

Maria: Oh, yes. An amazing artist! Your morning sounded beautiful.

T.Anne: Cool! It's surprising and exciting when you have one of those unexpected days. I'm so glad you've been spared a trip to the DMV. Not my favorite place!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  20. One day, Hubby and I were coming back from eating out. At the intersection just north of the restaurant we saw SEAGULLS flying over McDonald's. This was in Indiana. We thought it amazing and a bit unusual.

    Karen: Blessings to you too!

Paul: Can't experience them if we don't know they're there, right? :)

  24. What a glorious day you had. I would have loved to have seen the rainbows. I can't say I have ever had the feeling I would see something unusual or special. I do try to notice nature and small little miracles.
