Embracing Your Healthy Habits: Part Three

Today we're talking water. Hydration is vital to writers. The benefits of water can't be overstated. It keeps you alert, feeds your organs, boosts your metabolism slightly, and it's calorie free.

What do you drink the most of? Soda? Tea? Coffee? Milk? Juice? Water? I drink coffee in the morning and water or hot tea the rest of the day. Sometimes I'll crack open a soda in the afternoon. Since most drinks are empty calories, I make a conscious effort to drink more water than anything else. I'd rather eat my calories than drink them.

Here's my tip for staying hydrated. I get in the zone when I'm writing, so I always have a large glass of ice water nearby. After an hour or two, I'll reach for the glass and be surprised that it's empty. I don't even realize I'm drinking it! That's the healthy habit I'm embracing today. It's easy to get extra water in your body when you fill up a glass and keep it next to you while writing.

If you aren't convinced about the health benefits of drinking water, read Brain Power Improves Right After Drinking Water at Discovery News. It also gives tips on neck and back alignment when sitting at a computer.

Do you stay hydrated? What's your secret to getting enough water?

Have a terrific weekend!

  1. If I don't drink enough water my body quickly reminds me by giving me a whopping headache! Great post. :) Water is great for your skin too.

  2. I love water... although I love Pepsi too (at the moment caffeine free though for little munchkin inside)

I have a water bottle at my desk at work, and whenever I get irritated... I go fill it up and drink it. It gets me away from my desk to calm down.

Um... I drink A LOT OF WATER!!!

  3. Believe it or not that is ALL I drink. Just water. I dislike coffee, most pops, juice is too sugary and I am not a big fan of milk.

So unless I am partaking in a small glass of wine (rare) I am drinking water! YUM!!!

  4. Not a huge fan of plain water. I have a refillable sports bottle and like the Crystal Lite Iced Tea packets. Very little calories

  5. 3-4 cups of tea per day. MUST DRINK MORE WATER.

    Have a great weekend, Jill.

  6. Unfortunately, I am most thirsty in the evening. Hmmmm. Often when I am not feeling my best, I realize I haven't drunk much water. Always try to keep a glass at my side.

  7. Boy, do I need to drink more water! I love coffee in the morning, and the rest of the day I don't drink much of anything.

    Bad girl.

  9. I really need to drink more water! It's always a goal and I always forget. A glass by the computer is a great idea.

  10. I drink almost an entire nalgene of water the second I wake up. But usually that's it. I just really started drinking water throughout the day a few weeks ago... I get dehydrated pretty easily and got a monster of a headache.

    Still, I love Coca-Cola!

  11. Good morning!

I'm fascinated by everyone's habits. Is it wrong that I find your beverage choices interesting? :)

My girlfriend gave me a great tip the other day. She bought a 32-oz. water bottle. Drink two a day and you've met the requirements. Great idea, huh?

I think the idea of popping in the kool-aid or crystal light packets is great too. Anything to get more fluids!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  12. I used to be much more diligent about water intake. I try and be mindful about it, still, but don't put as much attention to it as maybe I should? One trick I used was filling a big jug/ pitcher at the start of my day (my day's allotment) and pouring from it. If it was still over half full by mid-day, I knew I had some catching up to do. If it was going down at the same rate as the sun, I knew I was drinking at the right speed. Maybe I should reinstate this "trick" into my everyday life. Thanks for the reminder, Jill. Patrice

  13. I only drink water! I bought a water bottle that can keep track how many I drink during the day. I love it! I know know what I should be doing at about noon and then refill!

  14. I drink coffee by the gazillions of cups in the morning. And like you, by afternoon I move on to the tea and hot water--more for hand warmth than anything! Now that I'm an old woman, my fingers don't stay warm they way they did wa-a-y back in my whiper-snaper days. So I have to grip the mug for warmth! ;-) And oh, yay, health too!

  15. I despised water for years. And suffered from recurrent UTIs, water retention, and passed out from heat exhaustion several times. Five years ago I resolved to make healthy changes, went on a calorie-controlled diet, started exercising, and finally obeyed God about my water intake. It has made a HUGE difference in my physical health. Even now, when I feel sluggish, or like I'm starting to gain weight, or my joints ache, and I pray about it, the answer is almost always the same: DRINK MORE WATER. Such a simple answer! Thanks for the reminder, BTW... it's been so cold lately I've been very bad. And diet Dr. Pepper is my beverage vice.

  16. Keep these great posts coming, Jill! When I get on the treadmill in the morning for both my exercise and intense prayer time, I take my 50 oz. jug of water with me. Forty-five minutes later it's empty and I'm ready for a re-fill while doing my Bible study and blogging. Hot tea is huge for me in the winter too! Usually a cup mid-afternoon and maybe a cup following dinner. Other than that, it's water all the way for me!!

  18. I enjoy milk, then tea. Water is at the bottom of the list. I need to make a conscious effort to increase my consumption.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  19. Water
    Coffee
    A little juice
    Rarely milk
    Never soda

As a former Diet Coke addict, I daren't pop the top and let the fizzy sound entrance me again!!!

    Love your blog, girl.

  21. I've been drinking plenty of water for several years now. Yesterday, I didn't even get three glasses in and today I have a headache. I think their is a correlation there. I'm a huge fan of drinking water.

  22. I am a water gal too! Plus, I am still breast feeding and drinking water makes a huge difference.

I am totally with you on preferring to eat my calories than drink them.

  23. Cup of tea in the morning, then water through the day, and iced tea for dinner. Occasionally a diet coke or some juice. Skip the milk, never cared for it, but eat yogurt instead:)

  24. I read all 3 of your posts about exercise, food intake and water. I think I do all 3 in balance. The gym is first, 6 days/week, where I generally drink two liters of water before 7 a.m. You know where I spend most of the morning don't you?
Food is balanced and healthy due to my upbringing in France. I drink coffee while writing, as well as water. Great information.

  25. Drinking more water is something I've taken to doing, and I've been so pleased with the results. I try to drink it the most, but have to have a coffee, tea or Dr Pepper once a day. It's a simple happy for me. :)

    Happy weekend, Jill!

  26. I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning, then tea and water all day long. I do the same as you--have water when I write, and drink it without realizing it.

What? Brain power increases after drinking water? Give me the hose!

  27. I love water. Sometimes at night, I drink a lot. It certainly tastes the best when you're thirsty.

  28. I drink a lot of water, but start the day with decaf. For a special treat, I'll make myself a pot of half-caf. (Rather sad, isn't it?)

  29. I'm thrilled that I'm not the only one with a coffee addiction and a deep love for Diet Dr. Pepper!

Still gotta love my water though!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  34. I drink 3 liters of water every day (almost a gallon) because I'm extremely prone to kidney stones. The occasional cup of herbal tea is nice too. And I love soups! That counts too, right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. My day starts with those little cans of Coke (not a coffee/tea drinker). I drink more water when I'm active and when I'm writing, reading, or crafting.

  36. SO IMPORTANT to get enough water. I also like to squeeze lemon or lime in, so refreshing! I agree that your brain power boosts right after a lovely glass of water! YUM! I cannot write properly without a tall glass of water by my side.
